The video ‘Fractus-UPC Deep Tech Hub. Towards the most disruptive technology’ showcases the Hub’s efforts to promote and support innovation, student talent and entrepreneurship within the UPC community across the most disruptive fields. This partnership focuses on projects with high potential for social impact, in fields such as healthcare and telecommunications.
Created in 2022, the Fractus-UPC Deep Tech Hub was born from a collaboration between the UPC and Fractus, one of the University’s first spin-offs. Its mission is to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in deep tech fields, such as artificial intelligence, 5G and cybersecurity. This partnership focuses on projects with high potential for social impact, in fields such as healthcare and telecommunications.
The Fractus-UPC Deep Tech Hub works to build a research, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship ecosystem based on cutting-edge technologies. Leveraging the scientific leadership of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) and Fractus’ international experience in patent commercialisation, the Hub drives the creation of new research lines and supports students through scholarships, academic challenges and talent development initiatives.
Among the projects underway are initiatives to improve cardiovascular health through everyday wearable devices and research into new methods to make 5G networks more efficient and to enable communication across different IoT protocols. The Hub also supports collaborations like the one between the Barcelona School of Nautical Studies and Open Arms, where machine learning techniques are being applied to reduce fuel consumption on the NGO’s humanitarian vessel.
Through all these efforts, the Fractus-UPC Deep Tech Hub has become a key space for promoting transformative solutions, connecting talent and responding to societal needs by harnessing the power of new technologies.
Carmen Borja, Director of Technology and Intellectual Property at Fractus, and Cecilio Angulo, professor and researcher in AI and Robotics at the UPC, explain it to us in more detail.
